flash work: design and animation

Flash gets a bad rap, but when used properly it can extend interaction in amazing ways. Plus, it's inherent design flexibility makes for a pretty exciting canvas. I, for one, love Flash. I love designing for it, animating within it and using it to explore new ways to create immersive experiences.

My flash expertise includes the following:

  • Interface Design
  • Graphics Animation
  • Character Animation
  • Actionscript 2 and 3
  • XML integration
  • Reading/ Writing to databases

Allstate Roadside Services Animation

This piece was created to act as a place-holder splash page. I developed the "line" concept to reflect the customized solutions and flexibility that Allstate Roadside Services offers it's clients. A particular challenge was to create a concept that could extend to the full corporate site and into other marketing material, as well. Ali Lawrence, a terrific animator, was a co-animator on this project and on the flash headers and footers used on the Allstate Roadside Services Corporate site.

Officer Bob

Officer Bob was a series of web cartoons that I created while I was the Creative Director at Aught Seven. We made 9 cartoons in all. The entirety of the series can be seen here: http://ww.officer-bob.com.

I storyboarded, character designed and animated every episode with the help of Rob Warmowski, a very funny man and the creator/writer for Officer Bob.

News At Seven

News At Seven is a system that automatically generates a virtual news show. Totally autonomous, it collects, parses, edits and organizes news stories and then passes the formatted content to artificial anchors for presentation.

Once it has assembled and edited its material, News At Seven presents the content to its audience using flash animated avatars and text-to-speech (TTS) technology. The result is a cohesive, compelling performance that successfully combines techniques of modern news programming with features made by possible only by the fact that the system is, at its core, completely virtual.

You can read more about News at Seven here.

I worked with McKinney - Chicago, a great Chicago agency, to create this iMethod's web campaign animation. It was great fun to work on, as I had just purchased Flash CS 4 and finally had an opportunity to use the new "bones" tool.

Norton Anti-Virus Christmas Campaign

The piece was created in conjunction with Juice Interactive, a talented Chicago agency. The microsite and banners were used to advertise Symantec's holiday marketing campaign (2008.)

FYI: it's not longer live on Norton's site, so I'm playing it off my servers. The "Buy Now" buttons don't go anywhere.

Trustwave

This animation was created with McKinney-Chicago and was used in various ways by Trustwave to promote their achievements. The elements section was also used as part of Trustwave's home page.

Keep in mind, with the exception of the elements section, this piece was not created for the internet (it was not optimized for download size.) Playback might appear jumpy.
