Freelance Switch

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

So… I’m a fairly recent fulltime freelancer.
It has been an interesting ride so far. Bumpy and paved. Very full of freedom, very full of fear and very full of questions.

- Do I have to incorporate? Is it better to be a sole proprietor?
- What exactly is tax deductible?

- How do I find new clients?

- How do I plan for next year?

- How do I avoid the seemingly inevitable feast and famine that comes with freelancing?

- Who in the world can i turn to to answer these questions of mine?!?!?!?

- Hello??? Anybody out there?

Just when I thought I couldn’t feel more alone-  I found a FANTASTIC RESOURCE!
Freelanceswitch.com is just the site I was looking for.

Their ABOUT statement sums it up – “FreelanceSwitch is a site for freelancers. Whether you’ve been freelancing for years, have just started or are considering making the switch, this is the place to get all the information and support you need.”

HURRAY! Help at last!!!

fickle much?

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Okay, so I just realized that I’ve just published my second post in 10 days declaring my chest shattering, earth shacking LOVE for a website.

Perhaps, I have a problem…

Or perhaps, I have a passion. I am a web designer after all.

http://www.designerstoolbox.com/

WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE?

<insert chorus of “Oh baby you, You got what I need,

But you say I’m just a friend, But you say I’m just a friend… >

They’ve got templates and guidelines for all sorts of printed materials (CD, DVD Labels, Postcards, Folders, etc…) Plus, web form element examples from all the major browsers. It’s an all around information smorgasbord. If you do any sort of graphic design this site is a must.

Bookmark it, baby.

Kids

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

It’s been almost 7 years now. I found these old polariods from when we first met.

We look like kids. Correction, we were kids.

Jason Tuller and Heather Smith, 2002, somewhere in Austin, TX

AND, I just realized we still dress exactly the same. That could either mean that our fashion taste is  “classic”, “retro” or in desperate need of reevaluation.

I’m trying to write a song for The PRF All-Star Songwriting Challenge Week 12 : http://www.virb.com/prfweek12

My man won/tied last weeks competition with a song he hated but everyone else liked. Go figure. This week’s challenge is to write a song about or in some way related to CATS… bonus points for making it an a cappella piece.

So yeah, I’m spending the afternoon trying to write and record an acappella song about cats. Life is grand.

Ian Francis – stroking it…

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

Ian Francis has an amazing blend of expressive strokes and detailed precision. Major props to this fellow from Bristol. He’s magnificently achieving something I’m striving for in my own work.

Natsuko Seki

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

Natsuko Seki has a really wonderful collage illustration style. But frankly, I’m especially impressed by the animation.

Take a gander. You’ll be glad you did.

Fish in the Sea…

This is actually an older painting. I think I completed it this Spring… but frankly, I’m not sure. 2008 has been a whirlwind.
