The Knight News Innovation Lab accelerates the transformation of the way news is discovered, analyzed and delivered by introducing and encouraging smart and practical technology innovation.
These are a series of illustrations I created for a large project. I created them to explore illustration styles so that we could pick a direction for the final project. As such things go, we ended up going with a fourth direction. That project is still in progress, so no details, as of yet. I'll post updates in the future.

These are background images used for the footer of the Highlights Kid's website. They are based on original illustrations by the incredibly talented Troy Cummings. They change seasonally, so I adopted Troy's drawing style and adapted the drawings for the changing seasons.

Bone & Bell recorded and released a 7 inch EP (May 2012). I created a series of drawings for 50 limited edition records. They are illustrations of imagined organs, representing each of the songs.

Flash gets a bad rap, but when used properly it can extend interaction in amazing ways. Plus, it's inherent design flexibility makes for a pretty exciting canvas. I, for one, love Flash. I love designing for it, animating within it and using it to explore new ways to create immersive experiences.
My name is Heather Smith. I'm originally from Texas, but now hang my hat in Chicago. As an interactive art director, web designer/developer, animator and illustrator, I've got over 10 years of experience in the digital arts industry; on the front lines and in leadership. After receiving my Interactive Multimedia BA from Columbia College, my career has gone on to encompassed a diverse scale of clients (from Fortune 100 companies to individuals) and a variety of work environments (from global advertising agencies to start ups.)
I also really love to make music. I'm in a band called Bone & Bell.
